winandmac Editor reviews the iPhone 3G: speed is the point to upgrade

I have wrote the exclusive and complete coverage of iPhone 3G right here, please take a look. iPhone 3G’s quick download speed makes me feels happy. Old iPhone 2G cannot bring the true internet experience at all. I summarized 8 new features of iPhone 3G that I like or dislike.Take a look of it after the break.
1. It’s thicker. Kind of.
Some people do not like the plastic back of iPhone 3G. Anyway, the iPhone 3G feels “very plastic”. I think although iPhone 3G use plastic back, it will not fall off from my hand like iPhone 2G. That’s why I love the new back. Also, plastic back cover can improve reception.
2. 3G Speed is amazing. Most important: Can receive call during online.
Not only the iPhone 3G loads faster, I will not miss any call when I am going online. (EDGE cannot receive any calls when you go online). The iPhone 3G connection reaches 3.6Mbps and matches the speed of public Wi-Fi hotspot, but of course, 3G is better. You can access the intenet with high speed no matter you are. No need to stand nearby the Wi-Fi Hotspot. DSL reports test results shows the download speed is 447kbit/sec. Pretty awesome.
3. GPS live tracking feature: disappointed
iPhone 3G does not show you how many Satellite it connected when using the Maps.app. You will not know whether the iPhone is receive signals from Satellite or just from the cellar network. It finds the location pretty slowly during my test. I need to wait for more than 15 seconds to see the blue dot (the exact location).
Sometimes, you will just see a large circle. It may or may not display the blue dot depending on whether there is any Satellite signal. Unfortuately, iPhone 3G won’t tell you whether it is trying to find the exact location. You will have to see back wait and see.
Once it found the exact location, the iPhone 3G can do live tracking really well. When driving on the card, it will track the directions correctly.
4. Looking for Installer.app (I mean jailbreak)
Admit it. AppStore still lack the software I want. There are thousands of freewares available in Installer on 1.1.4. I need AppStore, but I also need Installer.
5. Push technology is fast

I have also set up the Exchange server to test. The push technology is incredibly fast. Every time I make any changes, the iPhone 3G will sync the change within 5 seconds. There is no need to worry that data is not in sync. But, note once you have set up the Exchange account for Calendar and Contacts, you won’t be able to sync your local iCal, Address Book or Outlook’s Calendar and Contacts information.
6. No MP3 Ringtones?!
The old trick to put m4r to iTunes Ringtones seems still work. But, I am looking forward for the software to help me to convert any song I want to ringtones.
7. Loud speakers
Speakers are better than the old iPhone 2G. It helps to prevent missed calls. Apple still need to improve the speaker volume since it is not as loud as other brand phones like Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola.
8. No SIM lock
For some country version iPhone, there is no SIM lock. It means you can use any SIM card you want, no need to use the official carrier. But, since you need to sign 2-year contract before you leave the store, it seems there is no way to get the iPhone at low price but without contracts.
Everytime you switch the SIM, the iPhone 3G will display the Activation screen. Run the iTunes and wait for a few seconds. The SIM card will then be authorized and able to use. You will be able to call or use the HSDPA data connection. Note you need to ask your local stores whether the iPhone 3G is SIM locked.
