Apple Australia has released some detail to reseller about their local iPhone. The biggest suprise is that there will be no contract locks. It will not be locked to specific carrier, too. The news said that Steve knows the local carrier are not willing to co-operate with Apple because of the huge contract fee, so they decided to give up. (This makes the news looks a little bit fake, but we’ll see).
Since only one Australian carrier supports 2G EDGE connection, if there is no carrier lock, the iPhone needs to be 3G in order to attract customers. Hence, it is likely there will be 3G iPhone after months. The specific date of launching is not released, but the Australia iPhone will be sold through the local resellers.

I sure hope this is true; especially considering previous rumours that it would be locked to Telstra (worst carrier in Australia by far)
