The team of Gmail may also think that Gmail is too boring. You can change the theme by using unofficial plugin or greasemonkey scripts that is available everywhere on the internet. But, now, Google decided to give that feature to users officially.

Gmail has added 30 themes in Settings. Choose “Themes” tab and select one. It is expected most users will be able to select the themes today. If you do not, just be patient. Most themes are looking great. I think it works as well as the one for iGoogle.
