Gizmodo and Nate True’s blog has confirmed the iPhone 1.1.1 can now be kinda reversible to firmware 1.0.2. They use some techiques to enter the restore mode and restore it using old firmware. Detail instructions can be found at their site. Note the restoration cannot restore the baseband somehow, which means your iPhone 1.1.1 can back to firmware 1.0.2 as Wi-Fi and PDA with native applications.
Someone did manage to try to factory restore when they are back to firmware 1.0.2. After factory restore, the phone function may be coming back. (It means it can be unlocked using AnySIM) Some do report success, while some are not. That means your phone function may not be unlocked even though you restore it using old firmware. So, don’t update because you are brave or curious to try that out.
UPDATE: Gizmodo has found the way to enable the phone function again. click here to read it. We still don’t recommend you to try to upgrade under circumstances if you are good at iPhone 1.0.2.
If you want to restore your iPhone 1.0.2, make sure you follow this guide.
Detail about the downgrade method by KMAC after the break.
Here are the steps:
1) Make sure you have a copy of the 1.0.2 firmware handy and decrypted
2) Reboot iPhone holding top (power) and home buttons *BUT* release the top button 10 seconds into it (right after the screen goes dark)
3) The iPhone screen will appear to be off, but start iTunes (latest version worked for me on the Mac)
4) Option+Click restore and select the 1.0.2 firmware ipsw
5) The phone will restart and error out at the end, this is expected
6) Shutdown iTunes
7) Launch the latest iNDpendence
Jailbreak the phone using a decrypted 1.0.2 (it will flash all sorts of error, but stick with it)
9) Activate the phone
10) It will show the SIM error but you should be able to get back in
