iTunes automatically backups iPhone everytime you sync, unless you turned it off. But iTunes may not fit for everyone. You can now backup iPhone stuff right on the device with TimeCapsule. This TimeCapsule is not a hardware, but a great native software for iPhone. To use it, add “repo.databinge.com” to Installer as source. Then, install “TimeCapsule” which is available under “Utilities”.
TimeCapsule is now still in early beta. And people should not rely it for really important data. It backups most of the stuff including Address Book, Calendar, YouTube bookmarks, webclips and more. It covers all the stuff of iPhone. Restore is simple.

Notice all the backup will be stored under iPhone’s “/var/mobile/Library”. If you want to restore theĀ iPhone completely, you may need to use the SSH function to copy “/var/mobile/Library/TimeCapsule” to the hard disk first. Then, put it back after all.
Unfortunately, SMS sync, SMS selective backup, and SMS contact-specific backup does not work on 1.1.3 and above. And you need to give donation of US$12 or more to use all the features completely. You will be able to backup only few items in freeware mode.
