How to: Share the iPhone 3G data connection with notebook

    (for mac only)

I’ve posted the news about how to share the iPhone 3G data connection with notebook computers. It involves some installation of tools to iPhone. Later, I found a better way to share the connection from Lifehacker. In order to let the readers understand it clearly, I have made a very simple step by step guide below. Please take a look of it if you want to share the fast connection, and let your notebook online wherever you want.

Step 1. Jailbreak iPhone 3G. Install OpenSSH from the Cydia. Restart the iPhone once.

Step 2. In Mac, open the System Preferences. Click Network.

Step 3. Under Location menu, choose “Edit Locations”. Create a new location. Let’s call it “Using iPhone 3G data connection”.

Step 4. Click “Airport”. Then, click “advanced”. Choose “Proxies”

Step 5. Check “SOCKS Proxy”. Enter “localhost” and “9999″ in the field on the right.

Step 6. Repeat step 4-5 for “Ethernet” protocol.

    Step 7. Click “Apply”.

Step 8. From the Airport menu, choose “Create Network”.

Step 9. Enter the name you want. I choose to enter “notebook”.

Step 10. From the iPhone, go into the Wi-Fi settings. choose “notebook” as we created in Step 9. Click the blue arrow and write down the IP address.

Step 11. From the Mac OS X, run Terminal.

Step 12. Type “ssh -ND 9999 root@169.254.13.13″. where the “169.254.13.13″ is the value we copied in Step 10.

Step 13. You need to wait 30 seconds for the first time. You may need to enter “yes” to confirm the login. It will then ask you to enter the SSH password. It will be “alpine” by default. It will not show you anything after all, but it’s working now.

Step 14. Open Safari and you should be able to get online now.

Step 15. If you are using Firefox, select Firefox menu, choose “Preferences”.

Step 16. Then, choose “Advanced”. From the Network tab, click “settings”. Choose to enter Proxy like below.

After all, everytime you want to use the iPhone 3G data connection, choose the apple logo on the top left, select Location, and choose “Using iPhone 3G data connection” which we created above. Then, perform step 8 - 16. You will be able to go online now.
