How to: Jailbreak iPhone 3G and enjoy more apps besides AppStore

(for Mac only. Windows users, please click here)

    [Works for iPhone firmware 2.0.1]

Currently, there is no way to unlock the iPhone 3G. But, if you leave in Hong Kong or Italy, you are lucky because there is no SIM lock of their iPhone 3G. Anyway, even most of the iPhone 3G users are using the official carrier, they still want to jailbreak it.

I know, iPhone 3G already comes with AppStore by Apple. But, you know, not all the iPhone apps we used in 1.1.4 can go to the official AppStore. We want to jailbreak it so that we can enjoy more unofficial apps by the community.

By using the latest iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.0.1, you will be able to add Cydia (Installer.app alternative) to the iPhone 3G. You can enjoy most apps you familiar from 1.1.4 Installer in the near future. To do so, let’s follow this step by step guide. It’s easy.

Again, try it at your own risk. You need to backup all the stuff on iPhone 3G first before you do anything.

Step 1. Click “Expert Mode”. Then, click the iPhone 3G on the right.

Step 2. Choose the 2.0.1 firmware now. Make sure you choose the one ends with “5B108.ipsw”. If you can’t see anything, run iTunes. Connect iPhone, click “Restore”. It should show you to download the 2.0.1 firmware. Once it has started to download the firmware, disconnect the iPhone. Close iTunes when the download process has finished.

Step 3. It will show you the following setting screen. Click “general” now.

Step 4. Do not check “Activate iPhone” if you are using official carrier. Do not change other options. Click the bottom gray button to back to the previous page.

Step 5. There is no option available in “Bootneuter”. You may want to click “Custom logos”. Uncheck both option so that it will keep the Apple logo. Click the bottom gray button to back to the previous page.

Step 6. Click “Custom Packages”. Choose whether you want to include Cydia and Installer.

Step 7. For the other options I didn’t mention, you can change it whatever you want. When you have finished, click “Build”. Then, click the blue arrow button. Choose the location to save it. It will start to build the custom firmware.

Step 8. It will ask whether your iPhone 3G has pwnaged before. Just click “No”.

Step 9. Follow the on screen instructions so that you put iPhone in DFU mode. It will tell you to close iPhone Pwnage Tool when it is ready.

Step 10. Run iTunes. It will show you a dialog to choose whether “check” or “cancel”. Click “check” and wait for a few seconds. It will say the iPhone is in restore mode. Now, click “ok”. Then, press “Alt” key and then click “Restore” button in iTunes, choose the firmware you build on Step 7.

      Mariano,

Starting from iPhone 2.0, if you put the iPhone in DFU mode, and then restore it in iTunes, it can be restored into a good state. It may not be the really factory state, but at least, you can use the new tool above.

For the earphone thing, it may be hardware fault. Can you hear any voice using other earphone?

      omabae,

It means you are not entering DFU mode correctly. Try again.

OK thanks, but do you mean that I can use Pwnage with no problem, so when I send the iphone to apple support they won’t say that I have no warrante because I used Pwnage?? which is your opinion??

Regarding the earphone issue the problem is when I try to use the built-in earphone (i mean the classic way of using the phone) I can’t hear anything… using the white headsets or the speaker it works correctly, so I think that it might be a hardware failure inside the iphone, so I’ll need to send it to apple support

      Mariano,

Do you mean you can’t hear anything with the built-in speakers?

Before you give it to Apple, I suggest you to restore the iPhone completely first. That means put the iPhone in DFU mode. Click restore in iTunes so that it will load the default firmware to iPhone. By the way, are you using the official carrier?

    • 10. Mariano replies at 24th July 2008, 10:03 am :

Yes, that’s it, I can’t hear anything with the built-in earspeaker… with the speaker (the one you select when the call is conected by tapping in “speaker”) works perfectly well.
No i’m not using official carrier, It’s jailbroken and unlocked using a turbosim, and firmware 1.1.2. The iphone is OTB 1.1.2. I’m using the iphone outside the US.
Actually my question is that since I won’t be travelling to the US until september, I wanted to know if I can upgrade to firmware 2.0 and jailbreak/unlock using Pwnage, and then when I travel to the US restore the phone to its original factory settings as you’ve stated in the last reply so as to send it to Apple support.
Is that possible? or they will realize that the iphone has been unlock and jaibroken? Thanks

      Mariano,

Oh. that means it’s hardware fault. It needs to be fixed.

But, if you want to take that to US Apple Store to fix it, it may not be possible. Since you are not using the official carrier and do not have an activated AT&T SIM for iPhone, you do not have any warranty at all.

If you want to upgrade to firmware 2.0, it is okay with iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.0. You can restore to the original state in iTunes.

      OK! thanks!
I hope that they’ll repare it and will charge me for the reparation costs, ok?

      Thanks again.

      Mariano,

Not sure about that. But, they won’t help you to fix the iPhone at the store unless you sign up contract with AT&T.
